County Council: Lake County Extends Financial Aid to Gary Police

Lake County extends financial aid to Gary Police

(Crown Point – July 17, 2024) Lake County Government is providing more than $250,000 in funding to the City of Gary to help pay for badly needed equipment and improvements for the Gary Police Department.

The Lake County Council on July 9 approved entering into the agreement with the city of Gary that would provide $262,006 in county funding to pay for the police department equipment and improvements to services for the city and residents of Calumet Township.

The Board of Commissioners on Wednesday also approved entering into the agreement.

The Council will provide $142,006 from its budget while Commissioners will fund $120,000 of the donation. The funds will come from the Monsanto settlement agreement.

Councilman Charlie Brown, D-3rd, said he was grateful county government is willing and able to assist the city in its time of need.

“Gary is basically my district. I appreciate my colleagues joining me in offering assistance to the Gary Police Department,” he said.

“Hopefully it will provide the needed assistance to the city of Gary and we can continue to be a partner with the city of Gary in its needs,” Brown said.

Members of the Gary Common Council approved accepting the donation from Lake County at its Tuesday Common Council meeting.

Lake County Councilman Ron Brewer Sr., D-2nd, who served on the Gary Common Council for more than a decade, said partnerships like this help the city with necessary public safety efforts.

He said the funding will help the police department obtain some necessary equipment outside of its budget so it can focus more resources on surveillance and the Real Time Crime Center.

“This will be a plus. It will move the department in the direction of filling some gaps so police can make sure they are able to do a decent job for the citizens of Gary,” Brewer said.

Among the needed equipment the city is looking to purchase is a rifle vault or storage for the department’s police cars; new signage for the Gary Police Station, and vehicle outfitting for animal control.

According to the agreement, the equipment will improve the public health and economic conditions to benefit the citizens of Lake County. The equipment will belong to the city once it is purchased. As part of the agreement, the city will provide the county with proof the purchases have been made to fulfill the agreement.
